WASHINGTON, March 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. in recent days authorized the transfer of billions of dollars worth of bombs and fighter jets to Israel, two sources familiar with the effort said on Friday, even as Washington publicly expresses concerns about an anticipated Israeli military offensive in Rafah.
The new arms packages include more than 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK82 500-pound bombs, said the sources, who confirmed a report in the Washington Post.
Washington gives $3.8 billion in annual military assistance to Israel, its longtime ally.
The package comes as Israel faces strong international criticism over its continued bombing campaign and ground offensive in Gaza and as some members of President Joe Biden's party call for him to cut U.S. military aid.
The United States has been rushing air defenses and munitions to Israel, but some Democrats and Arab American groups have criticized the Biden administration's steadfast support of Israel, which they say provides it with a sense of impunity.
Biden on Friday acknowledged "the pain being felt" by many Arab Americans over the war in Gaza and over U.S. support for Israel and its military offensive.
Still, he has vowed continued support for Israel despite an increasingly public rift with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The White House declined comment on the weapons transfers.
The Israeli embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The decision on weapons follows a visit to Washington by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant this week when he discussed Israel's weapons needs with U.S. counterparts.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Gallant, apparently seeking to cool U.S.-Israeli tensions, said he stressed the importance of U.S. ties to his country's security and of maintaining Israel’s "qualitative military edge" in the region, including its air capabilities.
The war erupted on Oct. 7 after Hamas militants attacked Israel and killed 1,200 people and seized 253 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel has retaliated by launching an air and ground assault on Hamas in the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 32,000 people, health authorities in Gaza say.

The Claremont Serial Killings - Exposing the Hidden Truth INLTV.co.uk INLTV News Presents Chilling Words Dark Side Of The Claremont Serial Killings Book And Film Promo Video The Claremont Serial Killings "Chilling Words - The Dark Side of the Claremont Murders" Is An INLtv.co.uk Explosive New Book and Film that neither the Western Australian Police, The Western Australian Government, the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Hall, or even the Defence Team for Bradley Robert Edwards wanted to hear about, read or know about The New Explosive Book that lifts the lid off who was behind the Claremont Serial Abductions, rapes and killings, why they happened and why and how the Western Australian allowed them to happen. It is all exposed in the new book being published and film being produced produced called "Chilling Words - Dark Side of the Claremont Murders" Exert from the introduction of the new book Chilling Words The Dark Side Of The Claremont Murders by Steven Wijat How and why this story started. The stories in these volumes of books are all based on the absolute truth, which includes some of the untold story and information behind what are publicly known as ‘The Claremont Serial Killings … ‘.. that the Ruling Elite in charge of running the State of Western Australia and its capital city of Perth did everything in their power to stop from being written and published… “.. if I told the Authorities everything I personally knew as to who was involved in the Claremont Serial Killings … I would be dead in week …..these people, organisations and networks are simply far too powerful to try and expose and bring to account …. you can not think about trying to take them on… “… Sarah Anne McMahon…. who was murdered in November 2000 by Gangland Hitman Donald Victor Morey aka Matusevich, (now claimed by the West Australian Newspaper as having died of ill health in Kalgoorlie on the 5th June, 2020)….. under orders of those powerful people and networks that Sarah Anne McMahon could publicly name as being involved in planning, executing the Claremont Serial Killings and helping to cover up them being investigated and publicly named and shamed for being involved with the Claremont Serial Killings …. Even the honest decent people in control of the WA Government, WA Police, the WA DPP, the WA Legal System and the WA Media were either too scared for the safety of their family and themselves, or thought that the families of the victims and the general public could not handle or deal with the full real truth being brought to public light…. that they all went along with a plan to spend over $50 million over 20 plus years of money belonging to the people of Western Australia to deliberately go down the wrong wild goose chase or rabbit hole with their Claremont Serial Killings Investigations and prosecution and controlled mainstream media coverage presenting only Bradley Robert Edwards as being the sole lone ranger who planned, calculated and carried out all the abductions and murders of at least three innocent young women, which included Sarah Glennon, a young Irish Lawyer whose family are from Waterford..and Sarah Spiers and Jane Rimmer ... in and around Claremont/Perth in Western Australia in the 1990's ... belonging to the people of Western Australia... making sure all those powerful people, organisations involved … one way or another … in the Claremont Serial Killings … would never be investigated or publicly named …part of their most complex, devious and clandestine plan was to use the extremely public accusations with the help of the mainstream media outlets which are effectively controlled by the ‘Ruling Elite’, over the first 20 odd years against various innocent people as being named as suspects in committing these most horrendous crimes … which completely destroyed their lives …then to complete ‘Operation Claremont Serial Killings’ … use e very public arrest and trial of Telstra Technician Bradley Robert Edwards to convince the Families and Friends of the Victims and the General Public that the WA Police finally arrested the man that was the sole ‘Enigma In The Dark’ … in the words of the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia, Carmel Barbagallo SC …. that was the sole person who haunted those couple of streets in the Multi-Millionaire suburb of Claremont …who was solely responsible for all the attempted and actual sexual assaults, rapes, abductions and murders in and around Claremont and other Perth Suburbs from 1988 until the end of the 1990’s and possibly beyond…including constantly publicly naming Bradley Robert Edwards in all mainstream media outlets, as being the sole person who was responsible for the planning and execution of the abductions of Sarah Spiers, Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon..

The federal government has reversed the cancellation of Australian visas for some Palestinians fleeing Gaza.
Some Palestinians have been left stranded after finding out their temporary Australian visas had been suddenly cancelled.
Many had already left Gaza, leaving them in third countries without a visa to travel to Australia.
The federal government has suggested visas were cancelled in some cases where people had left Gaza "without explanation" of how they fled, or where other circumstances had changed.
Some were told in cancellation letters that it had been determined they had "never intended" to stay in Australia temporarily.
But it's understood some of these decisions are now being reversed, with additional security and other checks conducted by the Home Affairs department now complete.
It is not known how many visas had been cancelled, or how many have now been reinstated.
Many Palestinians are desperate to flee Gaza due to the devastation wrought by Israel's offensive against Hamas.(Supplied)
More than 2,200 visas have been granted to Palestinians since the October 7 terror attacks, along with 2,400 for Israelis.
Most of the visas granted to Palestinians are temporary visas, granting the visa holder essentially the same rights as a tourist temporarily visiting Australia.
There are character requirements that come with the visa, and they are granted with the intention the visa holder will eventually return home.
Speaking on the decision to cancel visas earlier in the week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said those sorts of decisions are heavily considered.
"This has been a difficult situation for people. I understand that it's a very difficult circumstance for families," he said.
"These decisions are made upon advice, based upon individuals."

Number of Palestinians have temporary Australian visas suddenly cancelled.
Posted Thu 14 Mar 2024
Finally escaping the horrors of the Gaza Strip and holding onto hope for some reprieve, Hani has found himself trapped in visa limbo.
"I left Gaza and decided to get out of the war and the bombing, and when I got my [tourist] visa to Australia, I kind of felt I was going to a better and safer place," Hani said.
But when the 23-year-old arrived at Istanbul airport on the way to Australia, he was informed his visa was cancelled.
"I was on the correct path. I didn't do anything wrong," Hani said.
"Maybe it's like a political thing. I don't know what is the problem."
Hani's family only found out when they tried to book him a flight to Cairo and he was told he couldn't leave.
"They told me I don't have a visa to Cairo, and I don't have a visa to enter Turkey even, and I'm currently stuck and afraid and don't know what to do.
"I'm going to be stuck at the airport right now. I don't have my luggage at all. I don't have another T-shirt [or] trousers. If I am lucky, I will buy with the rest of the money another food and clothes."
Hani's aunt Hanna, who has only recently left Gaza herself for Australia, has been desperately looking for ways to get her family out.
She said she's scared for her nephew, who is all alone, and the others he was fleeing with.
"I am very concerned about my nephew, I'm so worried and scared. Neither of us nor his family know what to do. The situation is very serious and dangerous to all of them," she said.
"He called me and told me he didn't know what to do. His family was left in Egypt, his mother has a blood clot in her leg. They have with them an elderly woman of 91 years old with a critical health condition."
Hani isn't the only one caught out midair. A number of Palestinians have been left stranded after their temporary Australian visas were suddenly cancelled.
The government has granted more than 2,200 temporary visas for Palestinians, and 2,400 for Israelis since October.
The ABC understands most of the visas given to Palestinians and Israelis since October 7 are subclass 600 visas, in the sponsored family stream, allowing whoever applies to stay in Australia for up to 12 months if they have a family sponsor.
On that temporary visa, you cannot work, or access education or healthcare — you are essentially a tourist, which is what people usually apply for subclass 600 visas for.
These particular visas are granted with the hope that those who have applied will be able to return to their home country, with character requirements in place for those applying.
In cancellation letters — obtained by the ABC — some Palestinians have been told they never intended a genuine temporary stay in Australia.
And it's left many in the community distressed, confused and looking for answers.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the situation was a "very difficult circumstance" for families.
"The government makes these decisions," he said.
"These decisions are made from advice based upon the individuals."
One woman, who chose to remain anonymous for her safety, had her visa approved in November but it was cancelled before she could fly, leaving her stranded with her children in a foreign airport.
Rasha Abbas, the co-founder of the Palestine Australia Relief and Action (PARA) Foundation, says people who are currently stranded in Egypt, like Hani, have a short window of being in the country legally.
"They can't go back to Gaza," she said.
"They have no access to services, no access to support, no access to anything in Egypt, because they're there temporarily.
"They're in no man's land."
'What changed?'
A spokesperson for Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil says the government would not comment on individual cases but that the government could cancel any visa if circumstances change.
"The Australian government recognises that this is an incredibly distressing time for Australians with extended family members in Gaza," the statement said.
"All visa applicants undergo security checks and are subject to ongoing security assessments. The Australian government reserves the right to cancel any issued visas if circumstances change."
Ms Abbas wonders what had changed since the visas were granted months ago.
"The war was there when those visas were issued … issued back in November or December," he said.
"So, what changed?"
